Laboratory studies of uv emissions of H 2 by electron impact . The Werner - and Lyman - band systems

چکیده
We report a laboratory measurement of absolute emission cross sections of both the Lyman bands (B 1:I.;i -x 1:I.t) and Werner bands (C •nu-X •ntl of H 2 by electron impact over the energy range from threshold to 400 eV with the same optical system. We find the emission cross section for the B 1:I.;i -x 1:I.t transition at 100 eV to be (3.55±0.8)X 10-17 cm2 (2.7 X w17 em\ direct excitation, 0.85 X w17 cm2, cascading) and the emission cross section for the C •nu-X 1:I.t transition at 100 eV to be (3.1±0.6) X w17 cm2 (cascading is estimated to be not present). The cross-section ratio QciQB for direct excitation is 1.21±0.30 at 300 eV in excellent agreement with published values for this ratio from theoretical calculations and experimental data of the optical oscillator strengths. We measure the cross section for cascading to the B state to be 24± 10% of the total emission cross section both at 100 and 300 eV. We show that cascading increases to 51 ±20% of the total cross section of the B state at 20 eV. The vibrational population distribution of the B state is found to be a function of electron-impact energy as the importance of cascading relative to direct excitation changes with electronimpact energy.

Visible to near infrared emission spectra of electron-excited H2
H2 is the most abundant molecule in the universe and is an active component of star formation. Inside dense molecular clouds, heating and ionization occur by cosmic rays, X-rays and shock waves, generating energetic electrons. Collisional excitation by electrons is the source of both UV and Visible-optical-IR (VOIR) H2 fluorescence in the ISM, circumstellar disks and certain classes of stars [1...
متن کاملMolecular nitrogen LBH band system far-UV emissions of sprite streamers
[1] The time dependent optical emission model developed by Liu and Pasko (2004) is applied to studies of far-UV emissions of sprite streamers due to N2 Lyman-BirgeHopfield (LBH) band system. Modeling results indicate that the LBH emissions of sprite streamers at 70 km are generally stronger by up to a factor of 10 than those from the first negative band system of N2 , and experimental measureme...

SiO2/ZnS core/shell nanostructures have been synthesized at room temperature by a simple wet chemical method. The prepared materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), UV–vis spectroscopic and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. X-ray diffraction pattern exhibits peaks correspond to the cubic phase of ZnS. Th...
متن کاملHighly accurate H2 Lyman and Werner band laboratory measurements and an improved constraint on a cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio.
Transition wavelengths on a large set of H2 Lyman and Werner band spectral lines have been obtained at an accuracy of 5 x 10(-8), using a narrow band tunable extreme ultraviolet laser. The data are used to determine a constraint on a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mu=Mp/me) from a comparison with highly redshifted spectral data of quasistellar objects, yie...
متن کاملImproved laboratory values of the H2 Lyman and Werner lines for constraining time variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio.
Two distinct high-accuracy laboratory spectroscopic investigations of the H2 molecule are reported. Anchor lines in the EF1Sigmag+-X1Sigmag+ system are calibrated by two-photon deep-UV Doppler-free spectroscopy, while independent Fourier-transform spectroscopic measurements are performed that yield accurate spacings in the B1Sigmau+-EF1Sigmag+ and I1Pig-C1Piu systems. From combination differenc...
